Extrusion Dies & Tips

 EXtrusion Dies & Tips

Extrusion Dies are used in processes involving pushing of slug through the die to generate the desired cross-sectional area. Extrusion can be carried out on different products at range of temperatures to attain various desired properties of extruded product.

Bharat Industries with its 30 years of experience in Extrusion Process along with its extensive process understanding and system competence of our specialists, can provide you high-quality extrusion dies to achieve utmost results in extrusion. Hydrostatic Extrusion

Hydrostatic Extrusion

In the blogs on extrusion and its types- Direct extrusion & Indirect Extrusion, it was noted that the major drawback with direct extrusion is the frictional forces acting on the billet. Accordingly, one can either try backward extrusion or can move ahead with hydrostatic extrusion.  Hydrostatic extrusion is basically type of direct extrusion, wherein the billet is confined in sealed chamber surrounded by pressurized fluid. The force delivered by the ram pressurizes this fluid, which further applies to the surfaces of billet. As the ram moves forward, it in effect applies force on the fluid, which causes displacement of billet through die, extruding the metal part.

Backward Extrusion

Backward extrusion

In the blog on Direct Extrusion, we had pointed the main disadvantage of direct extrusion being the excess use of force due to friction between the cylinder and billet. Accordingly, to deal with this issue, whenever possible one can use indirect or backward extrusion, wherein comparative lesser force is required for extruding the material.
Indirect or backward extrusion is a type of metal extrusion process wherein the billet(work-piece) is kept inside the chamber, which is completely closed on one side. In this type of extrusion, the billet and the container move simultaneously whereas the die remains stationery. Extrusion dies are placed on the ram, which applies the force from the open end of the chamber. These dies are held tightly in position by the “stem” which is longer then the length of the container. The column length of this stem decided the ultimate length of the extruded metal.

Forward Extrusion

Forward Extrusion

Extrusion Process are mainly of three types- Direct or Forward Extrusion, Indirect or Backward Extrusion Hydrostatic Extrusion. This blog would speak on Forward or Direct Extrusion.
Direct Extrusion, also known as forward extrusion or in-line compounding, is used greatly in production of semi-finished products including films, plates, profiles and even tubes in one process step. The intermediate steps of pelletizing are not needed in forward extrusion, thereby being very economical. It requires very little investment and has considerably low operating costs and energy requirements for extrusion. Till date, certain products can only be manufactured by in-line compounding owing to the single-stage direct extrusion needed. In direct extrusion, final product quality is the most important decisive factor in the complex production process.

Extrusion Process

Extrusion Process

Extrusion is process used mostly to create a fixed, cross-sectional profile objects. It involves impounding the metal in a packed cavity and allowing it to later flow through the other opening. Consequently, the metal takes profile of the opening. The whole maneuver can be seen as identical to routine squeezing of toothpaste out of the toothpaste tube.  The extrusion process can be either continuous, hypothetically producing indefinitely long material or can be semi-continuous making many products.
